Becoming a mentor

Before anyone is accepted and becomes a mentor on the young fathers mentoring scheme they must:

  • Complete a mentor’s application form
  • Provide two (professional and personal) references
  • Attend a face-to-face interview

The mentoring relationship
DCT - Young Fathers Mentoring - Young father and his childrenA mentoring relationship is over a 12-month period, and the mentor and mentee will meet for a minimum of 4-6 hours a month over this period; but this could be more depending on what works for a mentor and your mentee.

In addition, the mentor will commit to attending the following:

  • One training session before the start of the mentoring relationship
  • Two joint forums – one with other mentors, and another with their mentees
  • A celebration meal to mark the end of the relationship

The mentor will have to take responsibility of planning each activity and the meeting venues with input from the mentee; and complete an ‘Activity Form’ after each meeting. This is important so we all can keep track of the progress of the relationship.

So if you are a professional or business man and would like to make a positive impact on a young father’s life, then please fill out an expression of interest form and we will call you to set up an initial interview.
