Shaping Attitudes

Shaping Attitudes for the workplace

Shaping Attitudes for the workplace is an interactive programme aimed at improving the employability skills of 16-19 year olds in Further Education and Sixth Form Colleges who are preparing for work placements and apprenticeships.

The programme addresses attitudes towards two fundamental issues that could prevent a young person from either getting or continuing on a placement/apprenticeship programme; which are attitudes towards relationships and behaviour.
The section on Relationships covers:

  • Interaction
  • Challenges;
  • Teamwork
  • While the section on Behaviour focuses on issues such as:

  • Ethics
  • Diversity
  • Reputation
  • Appearance and speech/language
  • Risks
  • Time-keeping
  • Why 16-19 year olds need this programme?
    Our attitudes are central to the decisions we make and the level of risk we are willing to take. Our attitude determines how we cope with the challenges and the state of our relationships in and out of the workplace.

    So if anyone is taking on his/her first work placement/apprenticeship, they need support on the etiquette that’s expected in the workplace; so they have a positive experience. It is no longer enough to have the skill to do a job; there is a significant need to have the right attitude to deliver. Our recent blog topic asked teachers, career advisor, entrepreneurs this - ‘Skill v Attitude – would you rate one above the other in the workplace’ (Read it here), and those who responded all said they would rate ‘attitude’ higher than ‘skill’.
