Comments from our poll
We asked professionals on LinkedIn to vote online in our poll, which asked: “What is most important in the workplace? Skill, Attitude, Integrity and Accountability”.
Below are some of the comments:
Skill and Integrity:
For IT, and my perspective, skill AND integrity win. If forced to choose one, then skill.
Attitude:
Pardon the candor, but I venture to guess we have all worked with or for skillful people with bad attitudes. Organizations often keep skill around far longer than a good attitudes.
Accountability:
From my experience, accountability is organizational and very subjective. It must start at the top and be expected at EVERY level within the organization.
- John Soulsby
“It has to be attitude! We’ve had a number of key hires that went very wrong and on reflection it all came down those people not having the right attitude. It is one of the few traits that cannot be changed easily….you can learn a new skill….no matter what job you have there is accountability but it is your attitude that determines how you handle to that accountability….although integrity is important it still falls behind attitude in business.
Schools need to measuring more than just “knowledge retention”. I think it was Bob Proctor that said exams only test a student’s memory on a particular subject at a certain period of time. Is that really the best way to assess students? Or is it just the best we have been able to come up with?”

“As a Director I would say Accountability is key”
- Elliot King, Director, Minttwist – www.minttwist.com
“I would say attitude most definitely I think skills will get you that first rung on the ladder but attitude will carry you far”
- Jo Taylor, Head of learning and 4 Talent, Channel 4 – www.4talent.com
“Work ethic, attitude, and integrity. skills can (and will) be learned. accountability is part of integrity but its level of impact depends on the role of the person”
- Glenn Stanton, Associate Director at KPMG International
“If you have integrity, you are already accountable; skills and attitude are what drive you forward! All of the aforementioned attributes are integral to each other and are important to cultivate if you want to be successful!”
- Maria Laing, Executive Director of Business Development at MrMasterOnline.com
“I think integrity rules the workplace. Integrity is about consistency of one’s actions, values, methods, principles, etc. Without it, all the skill in the world will languish….Your own integrity will not allow you to rest on your laurels or skill if you will. In the right work place you get a chance to improve your skills I would hope”
- Sabrina Whiteman, Financial Services Professional at MassMutual Financial Group
“I remember when business ethics suddenly became a ‘must-have’ course for a while, but that fizzled out. If employers are not going to truly value integrity, skill, ethics, etc, but just want mindless drones blindly following them, it’s a sad state of affairs”
- Stuart Schnapp, PMP
“The first two skills I look for when hiring are aptitude and attitude. These are the building blocks for the rest. Flexibility is also now a key component. Also, the higher you go in the organizaton, the more you will need the ability to work well with the business leaders and understand how your job can help them”
- Hank Edwards, Chairman, Advisory Board at TechLINKS
