Shaping Attitudes
Shaping Attitudes for the workplace is an interactive workshop aimed at improving the employability skills of 16-19 year olds, and get them job ready for work placements and apprenticeships.
We work mostly in Further Education and Sixth Form Colleges; but run bespoke sessions for those working with either local authorities or other organisations aiming to take on work placements or apprenticeships.
The programme uses scenarios, questions, quotes, exercises (group and individual) and examples to engage participants and address attitudes towards two fundamental issues that could prevent them from either getting or continuing on a placement/apprenticeship programme. The two issues we focus on are behaviour and relationships.
The section on Behaviour focuses on attitude towards:
- Ethics
- Other people’s property
- Risks – time keeping
- Reputation
- Diversity
- Appearance, speech and language
The section on Relationships covers issues such as:
- Interaction
- Challenges
- Teamwork
Why 16-19 year olds need this programme?
Winston Churchill said “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference” – our attitudes are central to who we are, the decisions we make, the level of risk we are willing to take and the state of our relationships. It also determines how we cope with the challenges we face in and out of the workplace.
With Shaping Attitudes for the workplace, we aim to bring sub conscious issues to consciousness, improving participants’ chances of having a positive experience; be it their first or second work placement/apprenticeship.
It is no longer enough to have the skill to do a job; there is a significant need to have the right attitude to deliver – attitude compliments ability.
One of our blog topics asked teachers, career advisor, entrepreneurs this - ‘Skill v Attitude – would you rate one above the other in the workplace’ (Read it here), and those who responded all said they would rate ‘attitude’ higher than ‘skill’.
