Taking a ‘vacation’ away from the computer

I haven’t taken a vacation in a long time! I used to moan, but got over it when I realise there’s always a price or two to pay for being an entrepreneur – one of mine is not going on the vacation I want and or can afford just yet. I need not spell that one out – you can guess what I have in mind!

However, I know I should take some sort of vacation – everyone needs it.  I don’t necessarily mean travelling away to another location and completely switching off – although that’s recommended too. I mean taking a vacation and not doing any work – whatsoever, even though your computer is right next to you. I admit this is a hard task for me at the moment – just contemplating not putting on my computer is well, odd! Have I become too much of a workaholic not capable of switching off – completely??! So much for my promises to visit friends and relatives in town on their vacation, catch up on more reading – I am still reading the one book I mentioned last week, and not visted anyone – yet!

As we get to the 3rd week of August, I am conscious that if I don’t give myself a break (of some kind) before we get into the September, then that’s it till the end of year. There’s something about the month of September that creates a sense of urgency for most people, I think. For businesses, we want to cram everything (our not-yet achieved goals so far) into the last 4 months and see what happens; for parents, children are back at school, and they can refocus back on business, and for others they could be starting a new job, career, business or moving home. A very busy month!

But that said, I love the month of September! Yes not only because it’s my birth month :) , but because it smells of re-starting over – to me anyway. It feels like the start of the 2nd half of the year, and gives me the motivation to ‘keep on, keeping on’. So while I need a break, even if it’s only 3 days to make me feel I gave that to myself; I should somehow find a way (i.e. be more disciplined!) to manage the work load I have on DCT (I am writing an eBook), Bounce Point (doing all that needs to be done for a new venture); and Dream Corner. Did I mention I have been given an extra hour on the show? Yes the station have been very pleased with the shows so far, and thought I should have a 2 hour show. That means more work on that, but when I think of the rewards I am getting, it is a small price to pay. I am still loving EVERY minute of it, and that’s not going to change anytime soon.

So can any of you relate to the above? Do you have any suggestions on how I can take that 3 day vacation away from my computer and not feel guilty? Would love to hear from you.

Hi Viv I understand this feeling. Developing exciting business ventures can be all-consuming. I think what I have found works for me is to have a weekend with no technology. Once I tried slightly worried I would miss something important – and then saw that the world continued without me – and I got the message on the Monday! – I realised that there is no need to be permanently at the end of a flashing red light or compelled by the computer. Indeed I now realise that I felt 100% better, refreshed, with clearer thinking and refreshed in mind and body! Also the people for whom I am developing these opportunities were glad too! By the way I love the name of your company.

Thanks Stephanie, for stopping by and your comments. My test starts in 2 weekends time – the bank holiday weekend! I need to do it and I am sure I will survive, it’s always taking the 1st step that’s the hardest! I have my finers crossed. Hope you have a great weekend….and thanks again for stopping by. x

Hi Viv, Really interesting post! As I start doing more and more things I can completely understand where you are coming from. I’m September born as well and know what you mean about it feeling like the start of something new, I think for me it goes hand in hand with childhood memories of the start of the new school year, and the thought of fresh new pencils, notebooks and school uniforms conjure up feelings of starting afresh! I would say though that the summer was the time to re-coup and prepare for the challenges ahead and maybe if you focus on that you will be able to relax during your much needed break. Also some do say that creativity and new ideas come to you most when you are on down-time so there are plenty of reasons to take that holiday!

Hi Nicola, thanks for your comments and apologies I am just responding…actually I wanted to see if I could do what I said and this week I decided to really take some time off…..I shouldn’t be working all of next week and this week has been very easy – I mean very EASY! Taking naps and reading on a week day – haven’t done that in a LONG time. I can see how much better I feel! There’s still work to be done but nobody has passed out in the meantime! Thanks for your advise and hope you stop by again…x
