About the Bina programme
The Bina programme – an education resource to improve key skills
The Bina programme is a key stage 3 (KS3) PSHE resource for Secondary school and PRU teachers to help create a platform for pupils to learn how to make logical decisions. It focuses on improving three key skills: Critical Thinking, Literacy and Communication.
The programme uses graphic illustrated stories about four teens around six themes:
• Integrity
• Respect
• Dealing with disappointment
• Reliability
• Accountability
• Courage
For each theme, pupils are given a set logical-thinking questions based on the illustrated story, with emphasis not on the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers or opinions, but on the process of how they have reached their answers/opinions.
There is a discussion about the issues raised in the story, and pupils are enouraged to debate amongst themselves freely but constructively; helping them learn from each other and build confidence in their logical thinking/ problem-solving, decision making and communication skills.

We believe Key Stage 3 pupils in secondary schools and PRUs (Pupil Referal Units) will benefit most from using the Bina programme because they are at a crucial stage of their development where they:
• Seek to be independent
• Form close peer relationships
• Can be easily swayed
• Begin to assert their identity
• Challenge authority
