Who is a young father?
A young father can be described as any male under the age of 25 who has a child or children. In most cases a young father:

  • Comes from an economically and/or emotionally disadvantaged background
  • Engages in high-risk behaviour, may have dropped out of school, is unemployed and/or has a low income)
  • Has difficulty reconciling the conflicting roles of the adolescence and parenthood as he seeks his identity
  • Faces rejection from his family and friends

These facts make young fathers vulnerable young men and they require DCT - Young Fathers Mentoring - A young boyconsiderable emotional and practical support in their daily lives – such as understanding the importance of fatherhood, developing and maintaining a positive relationship with the mother of his child, as well as engaging in education, employment and/or training.

Young fathers need to be equipped to be all they can be to their children, as reports demonstrate that positive fathering and increased involvement is significantly related to positive child outcomes such as social competence, focus of control, intellectual achievements and emotional intelligence. (Hirst, 2004)

So if you are a professional or business man, and want to support a young father, please complete an expression of interest form and you will be contacted to discuss it further.
